Family: father a violin maker.

Teachers: Moritz Mildner (d.1865) for violin, then Antonín Bennewitz (before 1867). For composition: Jan Bedřich Kittl.

Associates: Adolf Brodsky (played viola in his quartet in Leipzig in the 1880s), Julius Klengel, Hugo Becker, Hans Becker, Paul Grümmer.

Professional appointments: Concertmaster in Breslau (1867), Conductor at the Lobe Theatre, Breslau (1870). In 1870s concertmaster or conductor in Chemnitz, and director of Baron Dervies's private orchestra in Nice. Professor of violin at the Leipzig Conservatoire from 1883 till 1921 (also Prof. of conducting). Conductor, Leipzig Bach Society (1885).

Pupils: Adrian Boult, Emil Bohnke, Wilhelm Grümmer (Adolf Busch's first teacher).
